You see an awful lot of motivational material and training on the subject of “don’t give up”. This is the act of deciding what you want to achieve, then following your dream and making it happen no matter the obstacles.

You hear this so much, is it possible that the idea is overworked? Can it possibly be overstated?

I came across a web page this morning that had a long list of people who overcame incredible odds and achieved success despite discouragement and (often) a lack of substantial support from others.

At first glance, I almost yawned because it started out with the same classic cases I’ve seen so many times.

• the trials and tribulations of Abraham Lincoln

• how Winston Churchill overcame adversity and refused to give up

However, as I continued reading down the page, I saw many people highlighted that I’d read about, but never realized some of the things they overcame in their path to success in what they chose to do. After initially questioning and wondering if the idea of “don’t give up” is terribly overstated, I came to quite a different conclusion.

All of us in network marketing or any other home based business need encouragement and inspiration as we go along. In any business, there will always be obstacles and challenges to overcome. Sometime, it might seem like these hurdles are just too high, maybe just a bit out of reach.

Often, though, our challenges aren’t nearly as formidable as we imagine. Sometime it takes perspective – looking at adversity and achievement through the eyes of others who have overcome terrible beginnings and constant attempts to put them down.

Here is the page I’m talking about – take time to read through all of these. All the points are brief, but have significant impact. I came away refreshed and ready to roll. I believe you’ll come away refreshed as well, and further inspired to achieve greatness in whatever you desire!

Have you ever known anyone who seems to have all the answers, doesn’t accept guidance well, and in general just doesn’t seem to keep up with the times? If you do, remember them and strive to be just the opposite in your own life.

People with a “know it all” mentality may experience success to a degree, but will never achieve all they are capable of. Reaching success in a network marketing business is within the reach of just about anyone, if they are willing to cultivate a certain attitude.

Outstanding leaders and money earners in network marketing home business ventures have two things in common.

• they are always learning and open to coaching – they never feel they know everything there is to know

• they strive to master proven methods for network marketing success and prosperity

Keeping a “student mentality” is so important to your personal growth in this business. If you ever reach a point where you feel you “know all you need to know”, you are going to be in trouble. Even the top network marketing pros keep learning and moving forward. This is one important attitude that enables them to become top leaders.

Keeping up with the network marketing industry is one key way you can learn and grow, because you will hear of others’ experiences and can apply them to your life and business. You’ll also be more informed and ready to discuss things your prospects have read and heard about.

You can keep up with the industry by visiting active network marketing and MLM message boards from time to time. You can also set up Google Alerts for various  topics, and receive summaries of new blog and site posts as they occur.

Go to http://www.google.com/alerts and create some alerts under common keyword phrases like “network marketing”, “MLM business”,  “your company name + opportunity”, and similar topics. You will get daily emails with links to news and updates about what’s new on these topics.

This story might not seem at first to belong on a home business blog, but it contains a secret to success in network marketing. Success is not always right where you think it is, and doesn’t always happen just when you think it should.

Let’s say you and a neighbor both work the ground and plant a small vegetable garden in your backyard. You get everything ready and plant your seeds. You care for those seeds, keeping all the weeds out, watering, fertilizing.

After a week, a couple seedlings poke out of the ground. You keep working and caring for them. After two weeks, lots of little  seedlings. You get even more excited, and start thinking you’re right on the verge of something big. After 3 weeks, you have real plants, but no vegetables.

Three more weeks go by, your plants are bigger, but you still haven’t gotten any vegetables from your plants. You figure it just wasn’t meant to be, and quit in disgust.

“It just didn’t work out. Look at all the time and effort I put into it, not to mention the money, and I didn’t get a thing out of it! Gardening doesn’t work!”

A month later, your neighbor harvests 10 pounds of potatoes, a bushel of tomatoes and two bushels of beans from his garden, just from the first harvest of the season. He wonders why you abandoned your garden just before it started producing.

The reason I related this story – I have seen and heard of so many people quitting their network marketing business at a similar time in their growth, and then THEIR SPONSOR reaps all the benefits of  their hard work. It is sad, but in my business I have enjoyed the fruits of hard work put in by people in my group who decided it was time for them to give up.

Please, please don’t give up before you really get started. If you are new to network marketing, or have people in your group who are, you need to know that discouragement almost always sets in early on. Because of the nature of building a business, you must put in a lot of work before you see real results.

Sometime all this work seems in vain just before it starts to pay off. Talk to your upline, seek encouragement, whatever it takes. Don’t quit!

As a network marketing leader, you’ll have the privilege of helping your new downline team members get off to a good start. Some will step out and do well right away. Others will face challenges that you can help them overcome.

When working with your downline, you’ll find that some will get discouraged because nothing they do seems to work. This is especially true for those who are fairly new to network marketing. The path of least resistance (normal human behavior) is to blame the technique or method used.

Here are some comments you might hear….

“We advertised on Google Adwords and nobody signed up. Google Adwords don’t work.”

“I tried giving out our full-color opportunity brochure, and nobody signed up. Giving out opportunity brochures doesn’t work.”

“I posted messages in several different forums for a month, and only one person contacted me and he didn’t sign up. Posting in forums doesn’t work.”

“I published a web site but didn’t get any visitors. This online network marketing stuff doesn’t work.”

When you hear this from your downline, realize that they are disappointed and baffled as to what they need to do. You, as their leader, should try to help them accept responsibility for their results and discover for themselves how they can make it work. Many successful network marketing leaders have been sponsored by all of the above methods.

Let’s consider those excuses again. Immediately after are examples of how we as leaders can help to make things work better.

We advertised on Google Adwords and nobody signed up. Google Adwords don’t work.

Help your team member find some detailed training about how to properly use Adwords. There are some good resources available. Most of the time people just jump in and give it a try, because it seems so easy. It isn’t that simple – you have to know what you’re doing. I had one guy sign up last year and start advertising in Adwords, despite my advice not to go that route just yet. He promptly spent $400 in advertising, sponsored nobody, and quit.

I tried giving out our full-color opportunity brochure, and nobody signed up. Giving out opportunity brochures doesn’t work.

Talk to your downline member about who they gave these to, what they said to them, and most important – did they follow up? Lots of people just hand out stuff indiscriminately and never check back with anyone they give it to. Teach your downline that followup is a key to success.

Help them learn how to properly present themselves on message boards and how to use signatures. Many people just start posting and make it very obvious they are there for one reason – to recruit. This does not work.

You know that a web site has to be promoted in the right places, and it can take quite a while to start getting any visitors. Your downline team member may not realize this. Some people think “if you put it up, they will come”.

The bottom line to all this – help coach your downline. Lead them to understand that there are many ways to successfully promote a network marketing business, but all methods require some advance planning and study before they can be used effectively. Help them get past the excuses and avoid the “blame game”.

Today I’d like to share a short video by Zig Ziglar that provides an excellent summary of how you can set goals for your network marketing home business.

The process is simple, but involves more than just “wishing” for certain things, like “more money” or “financial freedom”. Effective goal setting requires thought and effort to get it right.

In this video, Zig talks about setting goals like this:

• write down your objective (full time income, whatever you want to achieve)

• put a date on it (when you want to achieve it)

• identify obstacles (figure out what can stop you and be prepared)

• decide what people and groups you’ll need to work with (for example, your upline and downline)

• create a plan of action (your upline should help with this)

• learn what you need to know (there should be a training and mentoring program in place for you)

• decide “what’s in it for me” (you have to know this to drive your motivation and stoke your enthusiasm)

Listen as Zig  shares his thoughts in a way that only he can do. Use this to plan for success in your network marketing business.

If you’re into network marketing or any other home based business, you’ve surely had moments when you just felt like quitting.

All of us in business will have moments of triumph as well as walks through the valley of discouragement. Some of these walks in the valley can seem a-w-f-u-l-l-y long…and it can take lots of courage and considerable effort to come out on top.

Have you ever started a network marketing or other home business with the attitude “I’ll give this a try and see what happens”?

What happened?

Have you seen people start home business ventures and hit the ground running, appearing to achieve success and prosperity from the very beginning?

What was the difference? What did they do that others don’t?

In my own case, I remember well a couple of online business ventures I started where I didn’t experience the success I thought I should. Only in hindsight did I realize why.

Getting started in a home business takes courage and vision. You have to know what you want, and be dedicated to getting the momentum going. Starting a successful home business could be compared to getting a plane off the runway.

Think about it…it takes tremendous energy and momentum to get that plane off the ground and up to a certain altitude. At that point, the hardest work (getting off the ground and up to speed) is done, and the rest of the journey is much smoother and easier. Don’t you agree?

It’s like that in business or any worthwhile endeavor. The initial stages of growth and development are challenging to say the least. Once you hit a certain point, though, it gets so much easier!

I learned on Monday that one of my favorite motivational speakers and personal growth gurus, Jim Rohn, had passed away over the weekend.

I believe that getting and maintaining a winning attitude is one of the great keys to success in network marketing. I have always enjoyed listening to speakers like Jim Rohn, especially while driving or doing routine tasks around the house. Some motivational speakers annoy me because they sound so rehearsed and artificial. Some of them are literally a dime a dozen.

Jim Rohn was different. He was actually one of the few speakers that always left me feeling more positive, and wanting more. Jim was involved in network marketing himself, and produced an audio program called “Building Your Network Marketing Business”. I used to order this on CD and send to new members of my downline team, because the wisdom was timeless. I will miss Jim.  His presentations and personal growth programs will continue to be classics.
