MLM Strategies – the Old vs the New

mlm strategies to think aboutIt’s amazing how much MLM strategies for prospecting, sponsoring, and building a business have changed over just the last 20 years or so.

While the basic fundamentals of building relationships and creating a team are the same, the way we attract and work with our prospects has changed dramatically. Some will say that you can use exactly the same methods that were common in the 1970’s to build a powerful business today.

Realistically, though, communication technologies and much easier access to information for prospects have changed the game forever.

How do you see the old vs new MLM strategies? Here are a few contrasts between old and new methods. Which do you find more appealing?

The Old Way: Create a huge name list and launch your career as a telemarketer, calling everyone you can trying to sort through and find a few who might look at your business. Try to close them on coming to a meeting to learn more.

The New Way: Create your own personal blog, study personal branding, and learn social media marketing to attract very targeted prospects who are already sold on network marketing and looking for the right opportunity. Invite them to view a video presentation then follow up shortly thereafter with them.

The Old Way: Study proven sales techniques, especially “closing skills”, and learn how to lead your prospect through your presentation and get their positive decision to sign up with you at the end. The most powerful of all MLM strategies you can learn to use is close, close, close!

The New Way: Establish trust and build rapport with your already interested target market first through education and sharing content that provides value. Then, let your video or other presentation sort out those who want to proceed and learn more.

The Old Way: Every person is a prospect that must be signed up now, or dismissed. No focus whatsoever on building relationships for now or for the future – just move to the next prospect. Some will, some won’t, so what, next!

The New Way: Understand that many highly successful network marketers today were once dismissed because the timing wasn’t right when they were presented an opportunity. Know that if the timing isn’t right for your prospects today, continuing some sort of automatic followup to stay in touch and educate can lead to that person becoming a loyal team member later when the time is right for them.

The Old Way: Try to show an interest and engage people however you can, in an effort to persuade them to view a presentation or sign up. Ask them what they do, about their kids, etc even though you don’t really care, just try to get them to like you.

The New Way: Use modern marketing and technology to share, enlighten, educate, and build trust in advance. Then treat each individual as a human being, show genuine interest, and strive to follow up and keep them in the loop and continue building that relationship.

Isn’t it interesting how technology has given us the tools to meet people and create relationships on a far greater scale than ever? Do you prefer the old traditional MLM strategies, or the new methods that work so well today?

  4. It is amazing how much MLM’s have changed over the years. It has definitely become more professional relationship building versus the hard sells that so many network marketers use to use. I remember the hard pitches that never made you feel just right about joining. Good comparison.
