Five Major Reasons for Lack of Success in MLM Sponsoring

reasons for lack of success in mlm sponsoringMLM and network marketing is a business model that relies heavily on one thing that is necessary for success – communicating with people. If someone is not successful in MLM sponsoring, you usually don’t have to look far to understand why.

Communication is the foundation and core of any MLM network marketing business. Whether you prospect and look for leads online or offline, you must talk to them and relate once you’ve found them.

Here are five reasons that many fail to achieve success in MLM sponsoring.

They Aren’t Talking to Anyone at All

Surprising as this sounds, it’s true in many cases. The distributor is putting out ads, buying leads, perhaps other things as well but isn’t actually talking to anyone.

I see many people generate leads and then rely solely on email to communicate. Email is a very valuable tool, and often the first way you’re introduced to a prospect, but beyond that you have to get on the phone if you want to be successful in sponsoring.

Not talking to prospects is often caused by a fear of messing up or not saying the right thing. One solution to this is to get with a successful upline team member and let them help you make a few calls and encourage you as you overcome this fear.

They Aren’t Talking to Enough People

I heard that a big MLM guru once said, “if you want to make $100,000 a year in network marketing as soon as possible, get out and talk to 30 people a day about your business“. 30 people a day!

That sounds a little challenging for the average distributor, but the real point is that just exposing your opportunity to someone every once in a while won’t help you build up the momentum to reach success.

When you talk to a LOT of people, and fill your prospecting pipeline full of leads, you don’t worry as much about individual conversations. It makes it easier to relax and get people signed up.

They Aren’t Talking to the Right People

Many new networkers work up a list of prospects and contact them. Then, they continue trying to convince these people how wonderful their business is.

Here is the deal – once you introduce your MLM business to a person, if they don’t respond positively, they are the wrong person to be talking to at least for now. Don’t write them off, maybe follow up in a few months because things change, but move on.

You’re looking for people who are excited and open to opportunity now. The natural process of prospecting uncovers these people. Spend your time sorting and talking to the ones who are ready to do something – this is one of the keys that separates the top MLM sponsoring pros from everyone else.

They Aren’t Putting the Focus in the Right Place

The right place to focus, when talking to people, is on THEM. Talking about all the incredible benefits of your opportunity is a waste of time if it isn’t a match for their interest and where they are in life.

Take the focus off of “me” and “I” and stop thinking about how you’ll benefit if the prospect joins. Effective MLM sponsoring isn’t about you and what you want, it’s about your prospect and what they need at this point.

They Aren’t Listening

To be really effective in recruiting, you must become a good listener. How many times have you been approached by people who are pumping their home business opportunity, and just talk your ear off about all the trips and big houses and hot cars that the leaders get?

Listen to your prospect’s story and let them tell you where they are and what they are looking for. Focus on showing them how your business can solve their problems and meet their needs. It takes practice and patience, but becoming a great listener is a huge key to MLM sponsoring success.

  1. I love your comments about talking to the wrong people. Always amazing that new network marketers are taught to hammer away on anyone with a pulse! Karyn

  2. Eldon Beard says:

Hi Karyn, yes, that’s what many are taught. The better way is to sort through and qualify people first. So much effort is often wasted chasing the wrong people.

    Hi Eldon,
Great information. I especially appreciate your first point about not talking to anyone at all and more
importantly that you have to get on the phone if you want to sponsor people. Over 95% of network marketing home businesses fail and not surprisingly 97% of people that buy leads don’t even call them.
One of my mentors says, “if you don’t like talking on the phone, get out of the mlm business…”

  4. Eldon Beard says:

It is amazing how many people won’t call leads. I used to be like that too, and looking back, I know it was that fear of rejection I wrote about recently. Anyone reading this who sees this in themselves – you can overcome it!
