Network marketing success results from a combination of desire, proper training, and the willingness to take the right actions every day. It’s about deciding that you are going to just do it, and making a strong commitment to achieving your goals for your business.
Along the way, you’ll want to work with your upline leaders to create an action plan that best fits your circumstances and abilities. While some training is specific to your opportunity, there are “constants” that apply to any business.
Here are a few things that will help you on your path to network marketing success.
It Gets Easier Up the Road
In the first few weeks or months of your business, you tend to get paid little in proportion to the effort you put in. That’s the nature of the business. Many opportunities now have “Fast Start Bonuses” to help with this, but regardless, you may reach a point where you wonder if it’s worth it. Don’t get discouraged over this, because once you get some momentum going, the rewards start coming in faster and faster. Starting out, you get paid a little for a lot of effort. Later, you get paid a lot more for less effort.
Have a Great Time!
Your business should be fun. You should have pride in your products and enjoy sharing them with others. Talking to people about it, outside of the initial fear you may have to overcome, should be enjoyable. Have fun with your business, think about the rewards coming up the road soon!
Beware of Creating Obstacles for Yourself
There are some gremlins lurking in the shadows that absolutely hate network marketing success. These include procrastination, over-preparing, and over-planning. You’ll know these things are happening when you see yourself not talking and making connections with people every day about your business. You’ll find yourself spending a lot of time “thinking about it”. Procrastination, over-preparation, and excessive planning are often symptoms of fear of rejection. Here are some tips to help overcome fear of rejection.
Get an Accountability Partner
It helps to have someone you can partner with and be accountable to. This can be your sponsor, or someone else in your group. Network marketing success can more easily be achieved when you’re working with someone who helps you stay on track. The idea is to set goals each week for actions that will help you sponsor people, for example making 2 new contacts a day. Whatever it is, daily or weekly discussion of your actions and progress with someone else help keeps you accountable and focused on the things you need to do.
Avoid the Negatives and Focus on Positives
We live in a world filled with negative news and events. To counter this, you have to keep your attitude up and fill your mind with positive and hopeful things. I know that may sound a little “ho hum I’ve heard this a thousand times“, but it’s true. That old saying “garbage in garbage out” isn’t crazy, it’s the way it is. Make it a point to read or listen to inspiring and motivational material each day. You can do this while driving, so it won’t interfere with your normal routine and it helps a lot.

Got a minute? Take a look at what’s working in an online business for me...
The one other thing I would recommend would be to get involved with a mastermind group. I found that has helped me be more successful than any other tactic.

Excellent suggestion Debbie, I appreciate it!
Hello Eldon, these are really good tips. A lot of new network marketers forget that their business is just like any traditional business – it takes a lot of effort at the beginning, but pays off in the long run. For example, my daughter purchased her own cafe years ago – she put in a lot more effort in the first few months to a year, than she did after that. And, she made little profit at first, because it took time to build up her customers.
Network marketing is no different from any other business in that respect.

That’s what people sometime don’t understand – network marketing is a business like any other, in the sense of small rewards for hard work early on. The difference is, though, that the rewards later can be so much more than what you might expect from a traditional business.
Hey Eldon,
Yes — consistent effort and persistence in the face of adversity and obstacles it the true way to success in MLM or any endeavor worth seeking. Great advice.
I also like your idea of having an accountability partner, or “running buddy” as Dennis Karganilla (DK) likes to call them. Having someone else to be accountable to is a key to success in any business and in your personal life. It’s one of the big reasons why Weight Watchers is so successful for many people — those weekly weigh ins!
Good point Bob, I like the term “running buddy”. 🙂
I like your Weight Watchers example – I’ve known a lot of people who have had success with WW, and the accountability of the weekly weigh-ins is a big part of it. I’ve seen some quit because they think they can do it all on their own after learning the system, but many fail to sustain anything because they didn’t understand that the weekly accountability was a big part of their earlier success.
Great post, Eldon! I think that it is important to focus on the truth in what it takes to make it in network marketing. I’ve noticed that too many make the big promises and seem to berate their downlines for “not being committed” when they don’t get promoted quickly. I think that it’s definitely important to let people know about the learning curve when they get started.
Agreed Steve. It’s important to make it clear that work and a learning curve is part of the process. You don’t want to overwhelm people with all the details before they join necessarily, but you do need to stress that commitment and dedication is necessary for success.
Hello Eldon,
I think to many people get into this business and expect to make lots of money and retire in less than a year. There is a lot to learn in Network Marketing and it takes time. You have to have a deep sense of commitment to be successful.
Thanks for sharing this post.
Barbara
Hi Barbara, lots of people do get into network marketing expecting to retire in a year. Some people are actually able to do that, but very few….and that’s the stories you hear. In most cases it’s a 3-5 year plan of consistent effort and focus.
