What is it that makes network marketing leaders successful? Is it all about hard work, ambition, focus, dedication, communication, or perhaps a combination of these things?
I saw this posted in an office building earlier this week, and thought of how well it sums up some of the things that characterize home business leaders. It is a list of “10 Secrets to Success” that was published by Investors Business Daily a few years ago.
Here are the 10 secrets, along with my brief comments. What do you think? Which one of these resonates most with you?
IBD’s 10 Secrets to Success
1. How You Think is Everything – always be positive. Think success, not failure. Beware of a negative environment.
Network marketing leaders don’t let fear of failure stop them. We all have fears, often hidden from others, and you have to face and overcome them.
2. Decide Upon Your True Dreams and Goals – write down your specific goals and develop a plan to reach them.
Putting your goals and desires in writing seems to solidify them and help your mind focus on them more clearly. It’s a must.
3. Take Action – goals are nothing without action. Don’t be afraid to get started now. Just do it.
Plan, but don’t over-plan and over-prepare. Avoid procrastination. Just jump in and if you make a few mistakes (you will), just learn from them and keep moving forward.
4. Never Stop Learning – go back to school or read books. Get training and acquire skills.
There is a lot of excellent training by successful network marketing leaders out there (very likely some by your upline team). Get into it and learn all you can, and put what you learn into daily practice.
5. Be Persistent and Work Hard – success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.
Too many people give up on their MLM business long before success has a chance to happen. When you’re stuck and not making any progress in your business, get in touch with your upline leaders and talk about it. Let them help you make a plan.
6. Learn to Analyze Details – get all the facts, all the input. Learn from your mistakes.
When you’re out prospecting and building your business, don’t be afraid of making mistakes, just make it a point to learn from them.
7. Focus Your Time and Money – don’t let other people or things distract you.
In the Internet age, this is extremely relevant for network marketers. Find a good opportunity you like and enjoy, and stick with it until you succeed.
8. Don’t Be Afraid to Innovate – Be Different – following the herd is a sure way to mediocrity.
Being different in a good way and differentiating yourself is mandatory. Especially online, your prospects have lots of choices just a few clicks away. Be memorable.
9. Deal and Communicate with People Effectively – no person is an island. Learn to understand and motivate others.
Network marketing leaders know this, and learn how to develop a team spirit and encourage loyalty for the long term.
10. Be Honest and Dependable – Take Responsibility – otherwise, numbers 1-9 won’t matter.
I think that just about sums it up. What are you thoughts?

Hi Eldon,
You did a fantastic work putting down these success secrets.Actually they are some good ideas ,grasped and implemented over and over again.Nobody is born a leader, yet we become thus by conscious choice and action.Right now I’m working mostly on number 7 and 9.I’m learning how understand others and create meaningful relationships with them.I spent some time and money promoting something that I didn;t believed in 100% and now I’m looking for something close to my heart.I love this industry and the its energy. As you said never ever give up is crucial.
Thanks for sharing these great ideas.I printed your post already.
Wish you a fantastic day,
Radu
Thanks Radu, building the relationships is what makes everything work out. Lots of people jump into network marketing and fail because they don’t understand that it’s a people business and that cultivating relationships is what brings success for the long term.
This is a great list Eldon! I’ve always been challenged with that “perfectionism” problem so for me taking action is something I’m always working on. One small thing that helps me is I created a small vision board that I keep on my desk so that my dreams and goals are always right in front of me in living color! Thanks for the tips and inspiration!
Yeah, perfectionism has long been a challenge for me too, Marquita – it took a long time but I finally learned that everything doesn’t have to be perfect. Taking action is what matters most. 🙂
