Can you get better Google ranking with a WordPress blog? This question often comes up when home business people are deciding whether to publish a conventional website with just a few pages or go with the trend toward blogging.
For the last several years, blogging and blogs have become all the rage online. It’s well known that blogs are very search engine friendly, and they can also help you build trust and social proof for you and your business faster than with a conventional website.
Why WordPress? While there are other quality blogging platforms, WordPress has a far larger support community than any other. If you want to do something with your WordPress blog, odds are that someone has developed a plugin that will give you the ability to do it. An incredible selection of themes and designs, as well as all the free add-ons and plugins, makes WordPress the best choice for your blog.
Why are blogs so popular? Here are some of the main reasons:
- blogs typically feature large amounts of relevant, keyword-rich content that attracts prospects and customers who are seeking information about what you do
- blogs allow visitors to interact directly with you and discuss your content, which creates interest and encourages people to stay on your site longer and read more
- blogs typically have fresh content added frequently, which encourages new visitors to come back later for more or subscribe to your feed to get updates
If you’re in a home business, such as network marketing or direct sales, blogs are an excellent tool for branding and building relationships with potential prospects and customers. With a traditional website, you can create pages that describe your business, your background, and whatever else you want. These pages usually don’t change, and once visitors have seen them, they have seen them. With a blog, you can do all that as well as quickly and easily post fresh content that will help draw more visits and increase traffic.
Because blogs are updated often, they not only attract repeat visitors but also carry other benefits which will help you increase your lead generating and sponsoring over time. A good rule of thumb is to post something new 3-5 times a week. Some people believe strongly in posting new content every day, and that’s great if you can do it. Not everybody can generate quality content daily unless they hire a writer, so you have to come up with what works best for you.
These benefits of a frequently updated blog include:
- when you update your blog often, search engines will visit often and index more of your content
- the more of your content that is indexed, the greater your odds of being found in searches
- if your content is educational and enlightening others will link to it and increase your visibility
- frequent updates suggest to visitors that you are active in your business, which is a good thing
All of these things help you get better Google ranking. In addition, there is the trust factor to consider. The more good content you have, the more social proof you’ll develop, which in turn builds trust. Social proof includes comments to your posts and people sharing your content on the social networks. You can also use a Facebook app like Networked Blogs to help create social proof (see my right sidebar).
Bottom line, you can get better Google ranking, and more visitors, by creating your own blog and posting relevant content that will attract people who are looking for an opportunity or product like yours.

Hi Eldon:
I made the switch from Blogger to WordPress in February of this year and I am so glad that I did! Even though I lost my Page Rank of 5 with blogger I have quickly jumped to PR 2 with WordPress. My visits and pageviews have increased dramatically. I love all that you can do with WordPress.

Hello Kevin, good move! I think it’s great to have a Blogger blog as a resource, but it’s still important to have that self-hosted WordPress blog as your main site and “home base” so to speak.
